RESEARCH PAPERS
Estimates vary but credible evidence points to gigaton-scale climate change mitigation potential of biochar
Weng, Z. H., & Cowie, A. L. (2025). Estimates vary but credible evidence points to gigaton-scale climate change mitigation potential of biochar. Communications Earth & Environment, 6(1), 259.
Synopsis: Biochar is a promising CO2 removal strategy with potential benefits for food security, land management, and the circular economy. Nineteen studies estimate its global climate change mitigation potential at 0.03 to 11 Pg CO2 equivalent per year. This range varies due to differences in scope, definitions, and assumptions regarding biomass availability and biochar technologies. Recent assessments suggest a sustainable mitigation potential of 2.6-10.3 Pg CO2 equivalent per year. Updated evaluations using integrated models are needed to refine these estimates.

Mechanistic Insights into CO2 Sequestration via Clathrate Hydrate Formation from Molecular Simulations: Influence of Temperature and Pressure
Shen, Y., Shen, Q., Jin, Y., & He, Z. (2025). Mechanistic Insights into CO2 Sequestration via Clathrate Hydrate Formation from Molecular Simulations: Influence of Temperature and Pressure. Energy & Fuels.
Synopsis: This study investigates CO2 hydrate formation in subsea sediments under varying temperature and pressure conditions using molecular dynamics simulations. Results reveal that CO2 hydrate formation is more sensitive to temperature than pressure. Hydrate forms at lower temperatures (250 K) and specific pressures (50, 40, 30, and 20 MPa), with hydrogen bond formation playing a crucial role in hydrate nucleation. Temperature destabilizes hydrogen bonds, while pressure has minimal impact. Additionally, metastable hydrate cages can transform into stable structures through molecular adjustments.

Synopsis: The CDR-SPEC model introduces a mixed-integer linear optimization approach to design cost-optimal and time-dependent CDR portfolios, incorporating uncertainty in mitigation potentials, cost dynamics, and resource constraints. Results show that afforestation, reforestation, and soil carbon sequestration are robust options. Direct air capture (DACCS) emerges as the most deployed technology by 2100, but with significant variability, while BECCS is limited by land availability. Ocean alkalinization could dominate in high removal scenarios.
China’s carbon sinks from land-use change underestimated
Zhu, Y., Xia, X., Canadell, J. G., Piao, S., Lu, X., Mishra, U., ... & Qin, Z. (2025). China’s carbon sinks from land-use change underestimated. Nature Climate Change, 1-8.
Synopsis: This study analyzes the regional net carbon flux from land-use change (LUC) in China, highlighting a shift from a carbon source to a sink in the 1990s, with a net cumulative CO2 removal of 2.0 Pg C from 1981 to 2020. From 2001 to 2020, the average ELUC was −0.14 Pg C per year, representing over one-third of China's national land carbon sinks. The research shows that forest-related LUC activities significantly impact national carbon fluxes, suggesting that carbon sinks from LUC may be underestimated in global assessments and calling for region-specific modeling.

PODCASTS
Carbon Removal & Appropriations: The US Budget During Trump 2—w/ Erin Burns, Executive Director of Carbon180
"Sometimes, we skip right over the life stories of guests. Othertimes, it's everything. Today, it's everything.
Returning to the show after several years is Carbon180's Executive Director, Erin Burns.
Erin grew up in a coal mining family in West Virginia, got her start in Joe Manchin's Senate office, and has had a long and impactful career in carbon removal.
Today, Erin (re)explains how the budgeting process works in the United States federal government and how the appropriations process intersects with it. What is the difference, and where can voters get involved?
This is truly an improvised masterclass in civics education. Listen up for what you missed in high school, and how it will impact the future of carbon removal."
Rethinking Net-Zero - Do International Credits Help or Harm? | The CDR Policy Scoop
"On March 31st, EU Climate Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra floated various ideas for how Europe’s expected 90% emission reduction target for 2040 could be achieved.
One of them: letting EU countries purchase United Nations Article 6 credits to meet EU's 2040 climate target. Similar suggestions are currently being proposed by the upcoming German government.
This would require undoing a core principle of Europe’s Climate Law: only European reductions and removals shall count towards climate neutrality.
The backlash has been significant, especially in civil society and environmental groups."
Can We Pull Carbon Out of the Air? | The World as You’ll Know It: The Great Rebuild
"The Paris Climate Agreement says we need to reach “net zero” carbon emissions by 2050. That means for every new carbon molecule we put in the air, we have to take one out. Even the most optimistic forecasts still anticipate burning fossil fuels well past that date. So how do we balance the carbon books? Enter direct air capture, or DAC — a mechanical process that sucks carbon out of the atmosphere — which many believe will be crucial to controlling climate change. Right now the technology is extremely expensive, energy intensive, and has never been deployed at the scale necessary to make a difference. Host Arielle Duhaime-Ross speaks with the Dr. Klaus Lackner, known as the “godfather of carbon removal”; Dr. Susan Hovorka, a professor of geology who has been burying carbon underground for decades; and Dr. Emily Grubert, associate professor of sustainable energy policy at Notre Dame."

"Episode 2 of the XPRIZE Carbon Removal docuseries delves into how innovators are tapping into the power of rocks to combat climate change. Out of the six finalists competing in the Land track, four teams are pioneering ERW, a process that accelerates the natural reaction between CO2, water, and crushed rock to store carbon. While the core chemistry remains the same, each team’s approach is tailored to its geography, rock type, and mineral sources. Two other teams are innovating beyond ERW, exploring direct mineralization and mine tailing optimization to capture and store CO2 at scale.
Lithos Carbon (Durham, North Carolina, USA): Lithos sources mine tailings containing basalt rock and applies finely crushed dust to surrounding farms, using precision science to maximize carbon removal and track CO2 uptake.
Mati Carbon (Kanpur, India): Unlike other ERW teams, Mati works with basalt from the Deccan Traps, one of the world’s largest lava flows, spreading it across smallholder rice farms to remove CO2 while supporting local agriculture.
UNDO (Stirling, Scotland): UNDO partners with quarries to scale basalt-based ERW by integrating it into existing agricultural practices—expanding deployment across farms and tracking long-term carbon storage.
Silicate (Kilkenny, Ireland): Instead of using fresh basalt, Silicate leverages fast weathering carbonate-bearing materials, such as limestone and returned concrete—creating a carbon removal solution that removes CO2 rapidly, while enhancing soil productivity and pH.
Arca (Perth, Australia): Instead of spreading crushed rock on farmland, Arca is speeding up natural mineralization at mining sites. Their autonomous rovers move across piles of mine waste, adjusting moisture and surface conditions to help the rock absorb CO2 more efficiently.
Yuanchu Technology (China): Yuanchu is pioneering Direct Air Mineralization (DAM), a process that captures CO2 directly from the air and converts it into stable, solid carbonates that remain locked away for over 1,000 years—offering a durable and scalable path to gigatonne-scale removal."
How Carbon Removal Is Preparing to Go Mainstream | SXSW
"Leading climate scientists agree carbon removal is vital for limiting global warming. While giant carbon-sucking vacuums may seem like sci-fi, the technology is real and in use today. However, the industry must scale considerably to reach its full potential. In this fireside chat, climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe and Douglas Chan, COO of Climeworks, will discuss the state of carbon removal and how we can reach a future where excess carbon is systematically removed much like other waste."

Prof. Scott Doney | Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal | ESSICUMD
"Scenarios to stabilize global climate and meet international climate agreements require rapid reductions in human carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, often augmented by substantial carbon dioxide removal (CDR) from the atmosphere. While some ocean-based removal techniques show potential promise as part of a broader CDR and decarbonization portfolio, no marine approach is ready yet for deployment at scale because of gaps in both scientific and engineering knowledge. Marine CDR spans a wide range of biotic and abiotic methods, with both common and technique-specific limitations. Further targeted research is needed on CDR efficacy, permanence, and additionality as well as on robust validation methods—measurement, monitoring, reporting, and verification—that are essential to demonstrate the safe removal and long-term storage of CO2. Engineering studies are needed on constraints including scalability, costs, resource inputs, energy demands, and technical readiness. Research on possible co-benefits, ocean acidification effects, environmental and social impacts, and governance is also required."
